چکیده

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of various carbon sources applied at different initial concentrations of phosphorus and growth conditions, on the phosphate re lease and uptake in a pure culture of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus DSM1532. P-release and uptake studies with various carbon sources applied at different initial concentrations of phosphorus were carried out in alternating anaerobic/aerobic batch experiments. The best P-release and P-uptake rates were obtained when sodium propionate was the carbon source. Glucose addition in the synthetic wastewater caused lower P-release and uptake ratios, but did not have any significant influence on the final percentage of P-removal. The highest P-release and P-uptake rates were obtained with the highest phosphorus loadings. The highest P-release resulted in the highest P-uptake rates. The observed aerobic P-uptakes in a batch test, without preliminary resort to anaerobic conditions indicate the proba ble aerobic mechanism of P-uptake by A. calcoaceticus DSM1532. The results of the semi-continuous test indicate the possibility of the adaptation of A. calcoaceticus DSM1532 to high phosphorus loads (up to 100 mg P L"1) in wastewater.

The effect of media on evaluating the phosphate uptake capacity of activated sludge bacterial isolates

Since the identification of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus as the primary agent responsible for biological phosphorus removal, much research has been conducted to either confirm or refute this claim. The majority of these studies was conducted under defined laboratory conditions using various artificial media; as a result, many conflicting reports exist regarding the role of A. calcoaceticus and o...

Physiological conditions conducive to high cyanophycin content in biomass of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus strain ADP1.

The effects of the inorganic medium components, the initial pH, the incubation temperature, the oxygen supply, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and chloramphenicol on the synthesis of cyanophycin (CGP) by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus strain ADP1 were studied in a mineral salts medium containing sodium glutamate and ammonium sulfate as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Variation of all thes...

Sulfoacetaldehyde is excreted quantitatively by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus SW1 during growth with taurine as sole source of nitrogen.

Eighteen enrichment cultures with taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonate) as the sole source of combined nitrogen under aerobic conditions were all successful, and 24 pure cultures were obtained. Only three of the cultures yielded an inorganic product, sulfate, from the sulfonate moiety of taurine, and the others were presumed to yield organosulfonates. Sulfoacetate, known from Rhodopseudomonas palust...

Emulsan production by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus in the presence of chloramphenicol.

When exponentially growing cultures of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus RAG-1 or RAG-92 were either treated with inhibitors of protein synthesis or starved for a required amino acid, there was a stimulation in the production of emulsan, an extracellular polyanionic emulsifier. Emulsan synthesis in the presence of chloramphenicol was dependent on utilizable sources of carbon and nitrogen and was inhi...

Optimizing the production of Polyphosphate from Acinetobacter towneri

Inorganic polyphosphates (PolyP) are linear polymers of few to several hundred orthophosphate residues, linked by energy-rich phosphoanhydride bonds. Four isolates had been screened from soil sample. By MALDI-TOF analysis, they were identified as Bacillius cereus, Acinetobacter towneri, B. megaterium and B. cereus. The production of PolyP in four isolates was studied in phosph...
